Sino-New Zealand Prefabricated Building Academic Seminar was held at Jiangsu Urban and Rural Construction Vocational College on October 28th. With the theme of Prefabricated Building”, the Seminar invited scholars from Ara Canterbury Institute of Technology to exchange experience in prefabricated building development in both countries. The leaders of the teaching & research sections, key teacher representatives, and student representatives participated in the seminar.

The Seminar was divided into two phases. In the first part, Kam Cheng, Curriculum Director of Ara shared his research result on the development of prefabricated buildings in New Zealand, and analyzed that the construction industry cannot meet the current housing needs through traditional building methods. He demonstrated the successful cases of prefabricated components and prefabricated buildings in Christchurch to confirm that the prefabricated production capacity has solved the actual problem of housing shortage in New Zealand. He said that in the next three years, prefabricated buildings will reach 80% of the market due to the high demand and the implementation of new policies.


Phil Etherington, senior lecturer of Ara, introduced the types, advantages and risks of prefabricated buildings in New Zealand, and analyzed the factors that influence the adoption of prefabricated construction, giving the audience a comprehensive understanding of prefabricated construction in New Zealand.

In the second part, Tang Xiaowei, manager of the production technology department of Suzhong Construction Group , gave a detailed introduction to construction technology of prefabricated buildings with focus on the precautions for design and construction technologies of prefabricated frame structure and prefabricated shear wall structure, etc., leading the teachers to feel more intuitively the advancement and superiority of prefabricated building construction on site.


In the concluding remarks,Yang Jianlin, Dean of School of Management Engineering, thanked the experts for their exchanges and sharing. He pointed out that it is the responsibility and obligation of industry practitioners to respond to global climate change, develop green buildings, and optimize housing construction methods. He encouraged teachers and students to work with all the teachers and students of Ara to contribute our strength to the green development of the industry.
